The message of Paul's letter to the Christians at Colosse is a message that many do not want to hear: the all-sufficiency of Christ. Many today "accept Christ," but they find their christ inadequate: His righteousness alone does not justify; our faithfulness and works are also a condition of justification. Their christ is not one "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge," for his Word must be supplemented by common sense, philosophy, psychology, or science. The false christs of contemporary religion bear little resemblance to the all-sufficient Christ Paul preached to the Colossians, and Dr. Clark's comments reinforce the contrast between Biblical Christianity and contemporary religion.
